For those of you who haven`t had the pleasure of meeting her, this is the lovely Joanne Taylor. She`s been a member of the Hills Basketball community for over 20 years now, first as a parent, manager and eventually as a very valued staff member. In 2008, Jo was diagnosed with breast cancer, after diligently following up with doctors and checkups. The diagnosis turned her life upside down for some time, forcing her to leave her job and drop everything to fight the cancer. At the time, her daughter Aidan - our current U12 Girls 2 Assistant Coach - was only 12 years old and playing in our Representative program. Whilst her initial cancer could be removed through surgery, Jo had to receive ongoing treatment for almost 15 years. Everyone who has ever met Jo, loves her. She`s got an energy and sparkle like no other, and whilst she doesn`t like the term `survivor`, she is that and more.
We asked Jo to share her story because it`s unfortunately common. 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in Australia in their lifetime, along with 1 in 500 men. This week for Pink Round, we`re hoping to raise money & raise awareness for a cause that is close to the hearts of many in our community.

It has been a HUGE weekend for our Hills Hornets teams, with a double-header and our first games in the HIVE, the season is well and truly underway!
Our NBL1 Women brought the fight to the Panthers on Friday night, unfortunately unable to come away with the win against a tough team now lead by Tahlia Tupaea. A special mention to Emma Kary who walked away with 19 points, 5 rebounds & 4 assists. Meanwhile our NBL1 Men brought home the win at Penrith, with Ishmael Sanders accepting the ANZAC Round award for his efforts (36 pts, 2 reb, 3 ast).
Saturday brought the HIVE alive with our very first home games. The energy was electric in our Youth League Men 1 game, which had a nail-biting 2 point ending. Despite injury in the second half that kept him out of the game, Josh Morgan still managed an epic 25 points. Our Youth League Women 1 and 2 had convincing wins over Penrith and Moss Vale, demonstrating the strength of our women`s program coming through the ranks. The Waratah Men took on Springwood with a steady lead throughout, however Ben Graham took it home with 22 points. Our NBL1 Women then took on the up & comers from the COE, who have no shortage of talent, however our girls didn`t make it easy. Hannah Griffin showed off her skills, earning 12 points, 3 assists and 1 steal. Meanwhile, our NBL1 Men pulled through in the final minutes, earning the win by just 1 point. Chris Bryant was honoured with the ANZAC Round medal for his epic game, with 26 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks.
We can`t wait to see you back in the HIVE next weekend for our Double Header Pink Round....
IT`S PINK WEEK from Monday 29 April - Sunday 5 May! For this week, all games in the HIVE are celebrating our Hills Hornets PLAY4BCNA Pink Round and raising awareness for Breast Cancer. We`re encouraging ALL of our teams to wear pink in the HIVE this week, not just for our NBL1 Double Header this weekend, but our local competition teams too!
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian women with one in seven diagnosed in their lifetime. Over 20,000 women are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, as well as over 170 men. Your support will help these women, men and families to not go through their journey alone.
